This movie led me to think that life is not all about careers, education, or even money; a large part of life is about having hope, and living happy. Or has everything been a fantasy created by a lonely boy—"so powerful that I believed it to be real"? Maybe Lettie DID have an ocean. I choose to see this novel as a remarkable work that alters us from who we are now and tomorrow by showing us, for a moment, who we were back then. The Hempstocks promise to keep him safe, but the hunger birds begin to eat his world in order to force him off the property. Our main character sees the Nanny for what she really is though – an other worldly beast that threatens his life, living, and his family. You might shrug, or shake you head and laugh it off. And this last paragraph (like a lot of the book, actually) has two possible interpretations: what you get on the surface, and the slightly more in-depth understanding of what Gaiman meant to convey.
And even if we take that as it is the whole novel made me feel like the child, despite the magic woven throughout the story he tells, was telling a story that was no less true than what the adults perceived. So many thoughts race through my mind, after reading this book. Or maybe the Ocean, was a simply a way to connect to everything around reality, and to the things underpinning reality, including the known and unknown universe. There is no magic, nor illusion, nor any mystery to life. Ursula quickly ingratiates herself with his family, winning over his sister and seducing his father, while the narrator is alienated from his family and is almost drowned in the bath by his father as Ursula watches. They are a group of strong independent women who manage their farm themselves without any external help.
Read a little deeper, though, and you might find that Gaiman is referring to the whole story that we've just experienced.
